Looking for easy-to-implement social and emotional learning activities for your classroom? These mini-lessons may be mini in size, but deliver a big impact.
Activity: Students will learn to recognize and appreciate people in their communities who they don’t always interact with. They’ll go through an exercise where they think about all the school community helpers (bus drivers, custodians, kitchen staff, etc.) and the important role that they each play. Students will then create a meaningful hand-written note for one school community helper thanking them for something specific they do for the community.
Themes: Gratitude, Community, Connection
Grades: 4-5
Time: 15-30 minutes
Essential Questions: Who are people in your community who help others? How can a small act of gratitude spread through a community?
Student Action: Students write and deliver their thank you notes to school community helpers.
