Are you looking for easy-to-implement social-emotional activities for your classroom? These SEL Activities may be small in size but deliver a significant impact.
Activity: Students explore the concept of community and discuss how people within a community can be both similar and different. They read The Day You Begin, which demonstrates how sharing your story can help you connect with others, even when you feel alone or different. Afterwards, students create a community collage that showcases both the unique differences and meaningful similarities within the group, illustrating how all of these pieces come together to form one vibrant, connected community.
SEL Core Competencies:
Relationship skills: Collaboration
Relationship skills: Relationship-building
Social awareness: Interconnectedness
Grades: 1-3
Time: 40 minutes
Essential Questions: How can we ensure that every student feels seen, valued, and celebrated? How can we begin to build a community where everyone feels comfortable sharing and supporting one another? Why is it important for a community to include both similarities and differences among its members?
Student Action: Students reflect on what they have learned about their peers, considering what they have in common and what makes them different. They then think about how they can use these insights to strengthen their connections with one another and help ensure that everyone feels valued and included in their community.
