Are you looking for easy-to-implement social-emotional activities for your classroom? These SEL Activities may be small in size but deliver a significant impact.
Activity: It can be easy to focus on negative thoughts and forget our strengths. This activity encourages students to look inward at their strengths and accomplishments and use these to talk positively to themselves. Students will create positive affirmations that they can refer to and remind themselves how wonderful they are.
SEL Core Competencies:
Social awareness: Confidence
Self-management: Persistence
Self-awareness: Accurate self-perception
Grades: 1-3
Time: 30 minutes
Essential Questions: How do you speak to yourself most of the time? Are you neutral, kind, or unkind? What qualities and traits are you most proud of? How can you build a habit of speaking positively to yourself?
Student Action: Students practice saying positive affirmations to themselves when something feels hard, when they need motivation, or to start their day. If they keep practicing, saying positive affirmations and speaking kindly to themselves may become a habit, and they can always think of new positive affirmations for themselves.
Program Connections: This activity focuses on caring for oneself—a theme that runs through our core programs. To learn more, visit our PROGRAMS page.
