SEL Activity: Misunderstood Monsters

SEL Activity: Misunderstood Monsters

Are you looking for easy-to-implement social-emotional activities for your classroom? These SEL Activities may be small in size but deliver a significant impact.

Activity: Have you ever felt scared or nervous about something new but later realized it wasn’t as scary as you thought? In this activity, students will reflect on times when they have encountered “monsters” and how using a different perspective can help when facing intimidating situations.

SEL Core Competencies

Social awareness: Perspective-taking
Self-awareness: Growth mindset
Self-awareness: Examining biases

Grades: 6-8

Time: 35-40 minutes

Essential Questions: How can we challenge ourselves to do things that feel “scary”? How have we challenged our assumptions in the past? How does challenging our assumptions open us to new experiences?

Student Action: Students pay attention to times when they feel nervous or scared. In these moments, they try to be brave by asking themselves what assumptions they might be making, and practice seeing the situation from their “monster’s” point of view.

Program Connections: This activity focuses on perspectives—a theme that runs through our core programs. To learn more, visit our PROGRAMS page.
