SEL Activity: Sharing is Caring: Ubuntu

Are you looking for easy-to-implement social-emotional activities for your classroom? These SEL Activities may be small in size but deliver a significant impact.

Activity: Students learn the importance of sharing and acknowledging others through the South African philosophy of Ubuntu (oǒ’boǒntoō). They watch a video showing Ubuntu and then reflect on times they shared in their lives. In the days following the lesson, students are encouraged to share with others.

SEL Core Competencies: Social awareness: Interconnectedness, Relationship skills, Relationship-building

Grades: K-2

Time: 30 minutes

Essential Questions: Why is it important to respect and acknowledge others? What are ways you can show Ubuntu to members of your community? How would our communities be different if we all lived under the spirit of Ubuntu?

Student Action: Students share with others and consider how even small actions can show someone how much they care.
